Kings of the Trail #017

Freedom. It’s a word that seems to be used a lot these days…from freedom of speech to freedom of expression…the word seems to have been politicised to a certain degree. For me, a big part of freedom is going back to basics and being out in nature’s playground, experiencing the wilderness, the weather and the challenge of traversing these environments. Solo hiking can be a great way to experience this freedom, but safety is paramount and the tips below will help if you’re considering a solo adventure.

Following on from last week, Ryan Sandes delves into his pack and shows us the essentials in his kit bag for ultra races. Also, as Ryan would probably tell you, sometimes during trail runs you have to slow down and walk up steep climbs and there are some tips on how to do this in the most efficient manner below…but of course, you always have the freedom not to listen!

Please follow our social channels and share this newsletter far and wide with anyone that you think may be interested.

Until next week, be safe and enjoy the trails…

Last week we checked out Ryan Sandes and how recces and prepares for a 100-mile race. This week we go a bit deeper and see his nine essential kit items that always get packed at the start of an epic ultra run.

When facing challenging uphill slopes while on the trail, remember to stay mindful of your energy. Slowing down and walking on the steepest climbs can give you a chance to rest, replenish and mentally prepare for the rewarding downhill.

Embarking on a solo hiking trip can be an incredibly fulfilling adventure, allowing you the freedom to make your own choices and relish in the journey in your own time. However, it's important to prioritize your safety before venturing into the great outdoors. Take a moment to read through these tips for staying safe.

Each week I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection – just like trail runs or hikes, you can be sure that it will be a varied and eclectic journey, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

Rolling with the theme of freedom, this week’s tune is appropriately named Free. After the spikey guitar riffs of the previous selection, we return to a more chilled feel with a track that has a smooth flow and insightful lyrics. Apollo Brown’s relaxed beat gives it a warm and laid-back vibe. Feel free to turn this one up and kick back.
