Kings of the Trail #022

In his wonderful book about solo hiking the Pacific Coast Trail, Tim Voors says of the time spent alone in nature: “I walked on autopilot, unaware of time, and could feel there was space to experiment with spiritual questions…I could focus on one specific question for hours without my mind wandering off or being distracted. I looked at the same subject from multiple angles and subsequently tried to formulate an answer for myself.”

Whether it’s through hiking or trail running I have felt this too, albeit in small bursts and not enough to ponder the more spiritual questions, but certainly allowing me to work through some of life’s more trivial issues. This week we look at the numerous mental health benefits of getting out and hitting the trails…from the connection between music and running to the helping hand and increase in creativity walking can bring or simply just providing a chance to reset and forget the hectic nature of our daily lives for a while…there is nothing like getting out in nature and challenging yourself…

Until next week, be safe and enjoy the trails…

Trail and Ultra runners were surveyed on their reasons for ‘why’ they run…the results are more than conclusive…this rings true for me, as I find the benefits agreed on here do tally with my personal joy and fulfilment attained through running…

I personally am a runner that appreciates listening to music; to help keep me motivated, pick up the pace or go easy and help to get me into a ‘flow’ state, but is there a connection between ultra trail running and musicians? Science and personal experiences are helping to investigate…

Walking can help provide a chance to think, process thoughts and contemplate questions that may not be fully processed in our hectic day-to-day lives. What is the connection between; walking, writing & thinking? Bonus: the short film in this article is well worth watching!

When I read this article, I found myself nodding my head in agreement with everything Aum Gandhi was describing…the overall health advantages of trail running are many, but the mental health benefits are just as considerable.

Each week I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection – just like trail runs or hikes, you can be sure that it will be a varied and eclectic journey, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

So simple, yet so incredibly beautiful. This low-tempo and chilled piece of music is a great way to allow you to pause, slow down and just be. If you need an excuse to do that in your daily life, then here it is! Stunning…
