Kings of the Trail #026

All hail the trails! As last week’s edition showed you can find inspiration, freedom or joy in both the big and small things in life…I find all that (and more) when out on the trails – whether hiking, running or biking…just being out in nature and powering yourself to your chosen destination can give you so much more than tired legs.
“What unites the wisest trails, I have found, is a balance of three values: durability, efficiency, and flexibility.”
Robert Moor
This week Kings of the Trail pays homage to the trails, getting out there and in the thick of it. From an intro to trail running and why you should get out there and give it a try, to what can be learned from one of the best in the ultra running business…whilst also looking at how to practise mindfulness to help conquer your trail running goals and examining the science behind women’s phenomenal success in ultra running. With all that, you can be sure that this week’s edition is stuffed with ‘durability, efficiency and flexibility’ from start to finish…
Until next week, be safe and enjoy the trails…

I think you can guess my answer to this one! However, if you’re new to trail running or just curious and want to know more, here is a little primer article to get you started…

Courtney Dauwalter has been covered by Kings of the Trail before, but she is out there smashing records all over the place, beating men and women at some of the toughest ultras, so what can we learn from her?

Camille Herron, Courtney Dauwalter and others’ impressive records show that women can not only complete but often beat their male ultra compatriots. So, could it be that the longer the race the more level the playing field? Science is slow to catch up but studies are underway…

Mindfulness is becoming an increasingly popular and practised concept, not only for daily life but also when out running on the trails. Being present, controlling your emotions and focusing on the little things can help you conquer any challenge.

Each week I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection – just like trail runs or hikes, you can be sure that it will be a varied and eclectic journey, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.
An upbeat bouncy number to help you run, walk or bike along those trails…and you don’t need to worry about not being let in – all are welcome! Alex Lahey makes great indie rock which is so hooky you will have this one on repeat. Oh, and this tune is from an album entitled; The Answer is Always Yes, which is, of course, my response if anyone asks me about hitting the trails!
