Kings of the Trail #037

Records are tumbling; from marathons on city streets to ultras out on the trails, existing record times are being smashed with new standards being set. These faster times and longer distances have been achieved partly through a combination of the advances made in training and nutrition science, interesting new technologies powering performance and the athlete's vision and dedication. This same application of mental toughness and clarity can help us overcome any challenges we face in life and these achievements can inspire us each and every day.

“Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.”

Carl Bard

This week we try to inspire and excite with news of Kilian Jornet’s return to doing truly remarkable things after his injury…as is true in Kilian’s case, coming back from injury can give you a feeling of a new start and provide the idea to try something new, so how about some of the world’s most incredible long-distance hikes to get you inspired…whilst trying something new can often lead to life-changing events that could change the script as Benjamin Daives has discovered.

Until next week, be safe and enjoy the trails…

Kilian Jornet’s recent injury woes kept him from competing in UTMB and many other events this year, much to the disappointment of many fans. Now, back to full fitness, he has reminded us all what we missed by completing this epic Pyrenees adventure…

Although most of these long-distance hiking routes can be broken down into smaller, more manageable chunks, if you are looking for a challenge then these hiking trails from around the world provide plenty of options…

If you are planning on reaching new heights or breaking your existing achievements, no matter how sedate or extreme, you can help to strengthen your muscles and tackle uneven terrain by doing these exercises designed to help you say goodbye to mid-walk pain…

I have and will continue to, extoll the virtues of running, hiking and being out in nature not just for the obvious physical benefits, but the mental ones too. Benjamin Davies explains how he found ultras and how they have helped him open up and grow.

Each week I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection – just like trail runs or hikes, you can be sure that it will be a varied and eclectic journey, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

When I read the quote in the intro above and its references to a brand-new start, it reminded me of this classic from Paul Weller. Slightly slower and more mellow than a classic workout tune, but its inspiring message might help get you motivated and the guitar is pretty smooth too! Enjoy.
