Kings of the Trail #038

I was reminded of the quote below last week when my daughter was out on her new bike and starting to get to grips with it. It’s a hard thing to process; for a smoother ride, it’s better to keep moving and not slow down too much, despite any fears you may have. As in life generally, this also holds true in trail running or hiking, especially on the longer challenges. You must try to maintain the momentum going forward because if you slow down too much or stop for too long, the act of starting again gets harder and harder.

‘Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” Albert Einstein

This week, momentum is provided by some great articles to keep us energised and motivated to keep moving forward – from what runners think and how they behave, to where to go this autumn for an incredible adventure. Also covered is the incredible story of John McAvoy, who might have had to slow down when he was incarcerated, but instead used the experience for fuel and motivation and ultimately created more opportunities for disadvantaged youths and helped them experience the majesty of the mountains.

Until next week, be safe and enjoy the trails…

Each year Runner’s World asks the questions that you (may) have always wanted to know…or may be surprised to learn. From the why to the what, where and how…and how many people eat bananas pre-run?

As the days get shorter and the weather becomes more hostile in the Northern Hemisphere at least, these safety tips are even more important to consider the next time you head out on the trails solo…

John McAvoy broke three world records whilst in prison and continued his newly found passion for fitness and challenges after his release, writing a book and earning a top sponsorship deal. His recently formed Alpine Run Project is now helping to bring opportunities for disadvantaged youths to discover the delight of the mountains.

How about running with the bulls rather than running for the bus? Or maybe snowboarding in Chamonix rather than being bored at your desk? Sound good? Then check out these great ideas for your fall adventure.

Each week I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection – just like trail runs or hikes, you can be sure that it will be a varied and eclectic journey, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

British-Nigerian, Maleek Berry who was first a producer and later an artist in his own right, released this Afro-pop beauty back in 2018. When I recently heard it for the first time, I couldn’t help but smile – and I bet you will find it hard to resist the urge to move to the happy vibes from this tune. If you need motivation to keep moving – this will certainly help!
