Kings of the Trail #043

Thanks to Ridley Scott’s recently released epic historical drama about the life of Napoléon, the French Emporer and military commander’s life seems to be the subject of much discussion; his achievements, conquests, failures and morality (or lack thereof). It seems he certainly possessed a relentless determination and drive to achieve that led him on his path. Everyone in their day-to-day lives needs a little bit of this courage when faced with difficult situations or hard decisions, but especially so when out on the trails exploring…

"Courage isn’t having the strength to go on - it is going on when you don’t have the strength."

Napoléon Bonaparte

Courage takes many forms and what seems courageous to one might be simple everyday behaviour for others, but we should all attempt to recognise the individual courage involved in any situation…whether that’s trying new activities or jumping back into something after a long absence, or maybe running an ultra in subarctic temperatures, with the threat of frostbite and polar bear attacks. Actually, I think it’s safe to say and we would all agree that one would need a pretty large dollop of courage for anyone to try to attempt…

Until next week, be safe and enjoy the trails...

Sometimes, in fact, a lot of times, the biggest amount of courage is needed when you first get started, whether trying something new or returning to something old. The first and hardest hurdle is often just getting going and these tips can help that process…

Beginning something new is hard, especially if it takes you out of your comfort zone, but having the courage to try new things can be exhilarating. Here are some outdoor hobbies to consider…

This race takes place somewhere known as the polar bear capital of the world where the temperature can get insanely cold, but a few brave souls have the strength and courage to take on this harsh environment…

Brain Plasticity is a thing; it’s the ability of the brain to reorganise its structure and function. Usually linked to children as they learn, it happens all throughout life and should be encouraged through taking on and learning new skills and undertaking new activities. So pluck up the courage and get out there!

Each week I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection – just like trail runs or hikes, you can be sure that it will be a varied and eclectic journey, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

Some bands produce music that is instantly recognisable as ‘their’ sound, and this relatively new track from Blink 182, is a little bit nostalgic, but really encapsulates that. A ‘rock-punk’ ballad with gentle acoustic guitars, the track is familiar and comforting and instantly distinctive. One More Time is also about courage - the courage to tell the people around you how special and important they are before it’s too late and the courage to live in the moment.
