Kings of the Trail #053

Go Further & Explore More...

As most runners, hikers and adventurous souls will attest, during any particularly hard or testing period there will be a little internal dialogue and inner battle happening between their ears; with one side suggesting just stopping against the other telling you to keep on going. The key, for me at least, is simply to just try and to put one foot in front of the other to reach a goal - whether it’s based on time, distance or some other challenge - that’s the constant battle faced. This is a continually repeating process of falling and getting up again, even if not physically, then certainly mentally…

"If you fell down yesterday, stand up today.”

H.G. Wells

You can help to tame this inner voice by looking at new routes or trails to distract and entertain you on the way - some of the ones picked out in the first article are certainly bucket-list worthy. Motivation to keep going can also be found by learning and being inspired by others; for example; the two lifelong friends who have been competing together for almost five decades, or the grit and determination of ultra runner Tom Evans. It’s all here this week in Kings of the Trail

Until next week, be safe and enjoy the trails...

These incredible running routes and races around the world are some of the most spectacular to be found, the hardest part will be choosing which one to take on…

One of the things I enjoy about trail running is that it is OK to stop worrying about pace and timing and just go with the flow. Studies show that this approach can do wonders for all runners and not just those on the trails …

For almost 50 years, these two friends have competed together in extreme conditions, showing that despite exhaustion, wild animals and bouts of fainting, remarkable things can be achieved when you just keep going…

Tom Evans has been there and done that, he has experienced the highs of winning and the lows of being in physical danger at knifepoint, but that doesn’t deter him or stop him from coming back for more…

Each week I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection – just like trail runs or hikes, you can be sure that it will be a varied and eclectic journey, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

Since I discovered George the Poet’s podcast a little while ago, I have been a bit obsessed, (it is pretty amazing…check it out: Have You Heard George’s Podcast?)…anyway this led me to look up his music, and that of his long-time collaborator, Benbrick. This is an uplifting track from Benbrick, featuring George is all about being stronger than you think and finding the power and drive to keep on going. Very apt for runners and hikers and this week’s issue.
