Living in the moment. Breathing in and taking it all in. It’s important to remain present and focused on the task at hand or the environment around you. Endurance sports tend to have this effect on your mind and body naturally as they work in tandem intending to get you through the challenge at hand. However, it’s also important to look back and see where you have come from, literally and figuratively. When suffering and feeling completely deflated during these hard times it can be difficult to see any positive outcome, but with time and reflection, the growth and benefit can be fully appreciated. These moments of contemplation can help you fully appreciate that the hard work and struggle were worth it and have led you to the place and person you are now……

"One day, in retrospect, the years of struggle will strike you as the most beautiful.”

Sigmund Freud

The marathon is considered the benchmark for a testing, hard challenge that can result in incredible feelings of accomplishment and achievement, but what is the best kit to power you through this distance? Also covered this week; the rise of Backyard Ultras and 24-hour races - the desire to push and test ourselves isn’t slowing down anytime soon, it seems. What effect do these mind-blowing running feats have on the bodies of the people who complete them and for something a bit different check out the amazing people who swim in frozen Finnish lakes. That takes a certain mindset, one I’m not sure I possess…

Until next week, be safe and enjoy the trails...

The marathon is still regarded, rightly so, as a major challenge and an accomplishment that isn’t tackled lightly. So you will need the best gear for the job…

There has been a rapid rise of Backyard Ultras and 24-hour races in recent years around the world and in many different styles, but what are the origins of these epic races?

Russ Cook has been covered here at Kings of the Trail for his recent incredible achievements running the length of Africa, but what kind of damage does that do to your body…

Something a bit different, about people who are a bit different. It takes a certain mindset to cut a hole in the ice on a frozen lake and go for a dip. Character building? I’d say so…

Each week I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection – just like trail runs or hikes, you can be sure that it will be a varied and eclectic journey, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

When the going gets tough, the tough put on some rock music…or something like that. This is a great guitar-led rock tune, simply brilliant for pushing through the tough times. I could have chosen from a handful of Foo Fighters tunes, but this got the nod. So, turn it up, rock out and keep on going…
