“It’s not what you look at that matters - it’s what you see.”

Henry David Thoreau

In 1862, upon Thoreau’s death at the age of just 44, the obituaries painted him as an “eccentric author” and “one of the most original thinkers our country has produced.” His outlook and views on nature and life in the wild still shape our thinking to this day. He saw things differently from most and developed a deep love of being surrounded by natural life, giving him this unique perspective. This deep contemplation of what we look at can be applied to other situations in life. It can also be applied to the people we meet along the way, as much as the natural world we observe. If you take the time to look closely or ask pertinent questions you may be surprised to find there is more to any situation or person than you originally perceived. It’s only by being present and aware of the time and space we occupy that allows us to experience this deeper appreciation. Try to take some time to pause and look closer and you could be surprised at what you might find…

Until next week, be safe and enjoy the trails...

The Western States 100 is legendary in the ultra race calendar. With over 18,000 feet of elevation gain and warnings about the dangers of renal shutdown, heat stroke, hypothermia and altitude sickness, it’s not for the faint of heart…

Gordon Clark is a bit of an outlaw on the trail running scene. That means his views and thoughts may give you a slightly different perspective and you may learn something new…

One way to see more and see things differently is through the slower pace of hiking. Here are 10 of the best hikes in Europe…

Two wheels allow you to cover more ground and see more than two legs…so here are 30 of the best cycling routes in the world to get you going…

📸 Above the Clouds

Each week I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection – just like trail runs or hikes, you can be sure that it will be a varied and eclectic journey, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

This week the selection is a slightly different track. A beautiful, mainly spoken word, soothing wander through stories of people met and experiences had during life. Offering new perspectives and meditations on life and living. Part great tune and part philosophical journey…
