"I hated every minute of training, but I said, 'Don't quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion."

Muhammad Ali

The Summer Olympics recently concluded for another four years and the Paralympics are currently in full swing. Elsewhere in France, an event that truly captures the hearts and minds of trail runners everywhere (and the unofficial ‘Olympics’ of trail running) the UTMB, is taking place this weekend in beautiful Chamonix. So it seemed entirely appropriate this week to use this quote from one of the GOATs of sport, Muhammad Ali. While we get to see and enjoy the results of the intense training these athletes put in day after day - no matter what the conditions, or their feelings - it is the daily hard work that allows them to become the Champions we celebrate during these competitions. We watch in wonder as they perform feats of incredible physical and mental stamina and physical prowess, sometimes seeming to make it look completely effortless, without observing the grind that came before it. There are no shortcuts or quick fixes to perform at the highest level or your best possible standard. Only hard work, dedication and consistency. Showing up time after time, putting emotions and feelings aside to concentrate on the goal at hand to give the best chance of achieving the results when it counts. We should approach life similarly, not just in our sporting activities, but for all aspects of our day-to-day life. Whether it is in our relationships, our work or our finances - these all need to be worked at, consistently, to reap the benefits and allow us to enjoy the good times when they present themselves. It might seem like a mountain at first, but when broken down and approached bit by bit, step by step, amazing things happen. Ask yourself - what habit or discipline can I start today and continue tomorrow and beyond that will help me build and develop into the best, most successful version of myself possible? That’s where the magic lies…

Each week I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection – just like trail runs or hikes, you can be sure that it will be a varied and eclectic journey, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

This week I have chosen a track that might not be to everyone’s tastes, but it’s a tune that I like for all times when the going is hard and motivation is not coming easy. It’s got a solid beat and the message of ‘hustle and motivate’ gets me up and out the door. So if you’re not feeling it, put this on (or your own hype tune) and get out there and get at it! Remember as Nipsey says on another of his tracks; “Dedication, hard work plus patience.”
