“Do not pray for an easy life, pray for the strength to endure a difficult one.”
Bruce Lee
The U.S. Navy SEALs are pretty hardcore. I doubt many could argue against that. They have to endure extreme conditions and undergo challenges that most of us would never even dream of taking on. All in some of the harshest environments on the planet. The brave ones who complete the training and see service in this elite unit see these experiences differently from most. They see these testing conditions as a chance for them to get creative; innovate and do whatever is necessary to stay ahead of the enemy and stay alive. “Getting comfortable with being uncomfortable” is the phrase they use. They train and develop not only their bodies and military skills but also their mental strength. I often remind myself of this phrase when a run or if a workout gets uncomfortable - even on the easier sessions - getting used to the feeling and adjusting your mindset can provide strength and clarity that is hard to know you have until you're tested. Just remember that it doesn't have to be through the extremes of sleep deprivation or torture training that you can see how far your limits can take you. Even if that one tough run might sometimes it might feel like it’s torture…
Until next week, be safe and enjoy the trails...

Last week I covered the UTMB, one of the pinnacles of the trail running race calendar, but what is it like to compete in the race? It sounds pretty fun, to be honest…
Pushing yourself to your limits of physical and mental exertion, completing challenges that have yet to be tackled. These are easy to say, but what makes people stop talking and start doing?
Age may slow you down, but that doesn’t mean the trail running needs to stop. ‘Forward is a pace’ is a good mantra to keep in mind…
Maybe it has been the excitement of the Olympics that has sparked something, or perhaps it has been the talk of the UTMB that has made you wonder about your own limits. Whatever the reason, the marathon is a good place to start…

Each week I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection – just like trail runs or hikes, you can be sure that it will be a varied and eclectic journey, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.
From Country music sensation, Zach Bryan along with the hugely underrated, John Mayer; this bluesy, country track is an absolute gem. Smooth and chilled but not really laid back, it’s a great tune to get lost in when you need a distraction. The guitar playing is sensational - Mayer is an absolute master. “There’s a fire burning in the back 40, and I am still trying to work out who the hell I am.”
