“To be surprised, to wonder, is to begin to understand.”

José Ortega y Gasset

There are times when out on the trails when the view, conditions and level of exertion all feel just about right. In those moments, if we pay attention we can feel something outside of us, a connection and deeper appreciation for all things. The breeze or sun on our skin, the heavy breathing that happens without any conscious effort or the heavy load on your back. These sensations can help us take a moment and recognise them in that instant. It is these moments of surprise and wonder that can also provide us with a chance to understand our place in the world and our impermanence within it. The landscape around us reflects back on us with its timeless stature and presence, a gentle reminder to enjoy the moment and breathe it all in, while we still can. You can see this when watching young children as they experience new sensations and learn new things in their everyday lives. They have the freedom to express this joy and amazement. We all need to find that freedom, if only briefly, in our own busy lives and soak it in whenever the moment happens to strike…

Each week I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection – just like trail runs or hikes, you can be sure that it will be a varied and eclectic journey, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

The track is a beautiful, calming, evocative piano piece by one of the most influential contemporary classical composers, Max Richter. He recently talked about the influences and inspirations of making this new album (which is stunning and worth listening to): “I love exploring places on foot, so there’s lots of walking in nature.” The album features snippets of sound from everyday life, weaving in and out of stunning musical gems. The track I have picked out is called “A Colour Field.”
