“There is nothing impossible to him who will try.”

Alexander the Great

Alexander the Great achieved a fair amount in his short 32-year life. He was the ruler of his native Macedonia, ruler of the Greeks, King of Persia and an Egyptian Pharaoh. The empire he ruled over stretched from Greece in the West to northern India in the East - one of the greatest and largest ever seen. He showed incredible skill and strategy in war and is considered one of history’s greatest military tacticians. However, It can be hard to separate fact from fiction at times when it comes to ancient history. Little of the works from the period survived and the writings we do possess are incomplete or often compiled many, many years after the events they depict. One bit of history we do know is Alexander, as a young man, was tutored by Aristotle (who was featured last week.) What is less widely known about Aristotle is his breadth of knowledge and works on the natural world; zoology, botany, medicine and science in general. It would seem that it might have been this aspect of Aristotle’s teachings, rather than the philosophical side, that had the most impact on the young, future King. He differed from his tutor in his approach to the people he conquered, for example, preferring to integrate vanquished populations and establish more multicultural environments, whereas Aristotle saw slavery as the natural order of things and considered non-Greeks to be barbarians. I think, though, that Aristotle and Alexander would have agreed that nothing can be achieved unless action is taken and an effort is made. So forget the impossible and just try…

Each week, I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection of music. Just like trail runs or hikes, it will be a varied and eclectic journey, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy…

“That’s How I’m Feeling” by Jack White is an up-tempo, head-banging, rocking-out tune - in my book that makes it a definite winner for running or just for those times whenever you need a boost of energy. This track is also a good choice of listening material for when you find yourself out and about building that much-needed resilience…
