"Friendship is a priceless gift that cannot be bought nor sold, but its value is far greater than a mountain made of gold."
Muhammad Ali
Friendship is a wonderful thing. The effects of which are truly quite staggering. For example, people with no friends or who have poor-quality friendships are twice as likely to die prematurely - a risk factor greater than smoking 20 cigarettes a day. We are wired to be in a community and share with others, originally for safety and security but also to feel a connection and sense of belonging to something larger than ourselves. In trail running and hiking tests, the friendship and camaraderie of others were shown to lower heart rates and blood pressure and even make hills seem less steep and not as daunting. Part of the attraction of completing in ultra and endurance events is the feeling of being part of something bigger and having the support and encouragement of others, whether your support crew or strangers you may meet along the way. On long-distance thru-hikes, such as the Appalachian Trail, hikers often gain personal trail names given to them by others and can reunite at random times on the route - something that helps support, motivate and Kajol during the toughest elements. This week, try to get out there with a friend, or find and join a local running or hiking group and go out with force in the world, keeping a trusting, optimistic spirit that can allow you to connect with others, share the journey and make friends along the way.
Until next week, be safe and enjoy the trails...

This week the infamous Barkley Marathons was so tough, that no one finished to claim the win. Why are these backyard ultras so popular, when they are so incredibly hard?

Friendship and comradery are one thing, but what are the rudest things you can do when out on the trails?

Making friends with other kids and making friends with nature, sounds perfect…

This article is from last year, but I love the sentiment and idea behind it - an appreciation for those around us and a little distraction on long runs…

Each week, I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection of music. Like trail runs or hikes, the playlist will be varied and eclectic, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy…
There are many versions of this tune that I could have gone for, including the very worthy original. Otis Redding comes out on top, however, with this upbeat and lively interpretation. His voice is divine, but whilst backing him up, the musicians do a pretty swell job themselves. Immense…
