"Let children walk with nature, let them see the beautiful blendings and communions of death and life, their joyous inseparable unity, as taught in woods and meadows, plains and mountains and streams of our blessed star, and they will learn that death is stingless indeed, and as beautiful as life, and that the grave has no victory, for it never fights."

John Muir

As parents, we have a natural desire and instinct to protect our children and ensure they are safe at all times. There are numerous terms for parents who don’t let their kids play freely, unobserved or allow them to try (and fail) new things through which they can learn and grow. We know there is great value in letting them play and experience the world outside the safety of their homes, but we often fail to make it happen. It’s the times they spend getting wet and muddy, or hot and sweaty out in nature that they can learn about the world around them, but also discover the strength and resilience that resides inside them. It’s about being present, fully aware of their surroundings and seeing life in all its glory and ugliness. As adults, we tend to forget this all too often and neglect to apply it to our own lives as well. We spend too much time in an office, a car, the mall or at home and fail to find the time to get out and experience the world ourselves. Through pushing ourselves and testing what we are capable of, we can grow as individuals. There is more to it, though. We must remember that we demonstrate and set an example to our children through our actions as adults. Leading by example and showing them the beauty and joy of being in nature whatever the weather or landscape while being prepared and tackling the challenges that may be faced - these are the chances to share the joy and growth that the trail can offer…

Until next week, be safe and enjoy the trails...

Each week, I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection of music. Like trail runs or hikes, the playlist will be varied and eclectic, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy…

I could relate this song to growth and resilience and the similarities to overcoming addiction, or I could use the stories of ultra athletes who have managed addiction to find a love of the sport…but really, this is just a good ol’ sing-along track by Jelly Roll that I enjoyed and wanted to share. Hope that’s OK!?
