Jackie Robinson knew a thing or two about stepping up when the situation required it and not idly sitting on the sidelines. Almost 80 years ago, his debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers changed the sport of baseball forever and broke social norms that would help shift society and the living situations for millions of Americans, the echoes of which continue to this day. Throughout his first season, he endured a torrent of abuse, racist taunts, pitches thrown at his head and death threats, yet he went on to win the inaugural Rookie of the Year award in that debut 1947 season. His bravery and beliefs in what he felt was right and just changed perceptions and ensured he would never be a bystander in life. Over the next ten years of his career, he would go on to win a Most Valuable Player award, six National League pennants, and a World Series ring and be a catalyst in breaking down the segregation in baseball, doing so with decency, commitment and courage. His example can be used by us today, in our own lives, by deciding if we want to be merely a spectator or if we should get up and participate in the world around us and go forward to chase our own goals, be they grand or humble...
