“Nothing important comes into being overnight; even grapes or figs need time to ripen.”
Epictetus
Epictetus’ teachings are only known to us through the writings and notes of his students, but these fragments and snippets of wisdom are enough for us to grasp the central tenets of his teachings. This quote from his ‘Discourses’ refers to the patient process of gaining knowledge, wisdom and, hopefully, virtue. The principles of appreciating this value of patience, understanding the need for consistency and enjoying the process are all relevant to our health and our desire to get out in nature. In our modern society, we are becoming increasingly expectant that everything can come immediately, but I love watching the trails and the surroundings change slowly over time; emerging from winter and blooming in the spring sunshine and rain. You can only appreciate this by observing and paying attention to the subtle differences around you and looking at the finer details as things change; if not, you may suddenly realise nature’s beauty and marvel at the speed at which it appeared. By noticing the smaller details, you can gain a more profound appreciation of the gradual and ever-changing world around you. And so it is for us on our journey of betterment and self-improvement…learn to notice how the hilll climbs get slightly easier or the post-exercise recovery is a little bit smoother and you can start to enjoy the process as much as the result…
Until next week, be safe and enjoy the trails...

Each week, I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection of music. Like trail runs or hikes, the playlist will be varied and eclectic, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy…
I doubt many will have heard of Soul Coughing, I hadn’t, until I heard this track on a TV show. It’s wild. Their sound is described as ‘deep slacker jazz’, which is a fitting description of this 90s band’s energy and noise. A thumpingly great bass line will help you get a bounce in your step and your head nodding…
