“Follow your enthusiasm. It's something I've always believed in. Find those parts of your life you enjoy the most. Do what you enjoy doing."

Jim Henson

Jim Henson is synonymous with puppetry and the characters and worlds he created. His journey started as he was desperate to get into television, and the most immediate avenue open to him at the time was a job as a puppeteer. Despite this uninspiring start, he went on to create so many wonderful characters and shows that are not only much loved and remembered but also were a continuing source of surprise and delight. He introduced changes and ideas that kept the audience (both young and old) coming back for more. He was innovative in his use of television studio sets and with mixing humans and puppets, allowing their interactions to be more natural and life-like. To this day, the original Kermit the Frog (made from his mother’s coat and his jeans - complete with ping pong ball eyes) is one of the most treasured items in the Smithsonian museum. One of his underlying passions was promoting understanding across cultures and around the world…this was the inspiration for Fraggle Rock (a personal favourite!) and he revelled in the chance to mix things up and change his approach and how people viewed puppetry. What does all this have to do with hiking and trail running? Well, his sudden and early death adds extra power and resonance to his words above, and they should remind us to enjoy the most of each and try to spend at least some of it doing what you love, puppets or no puppets…

Until next week, be safe and enjoy the trails...

If you need to do something complicated and challenging, you should hire someone with the knowledge and experience - enter the running coach…

Each week, I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection of music. Like trail runs or hikes, the playlist will be varied and eclectic, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy…

I listen to a fair amount of DJ mixes on my runs, and once in a while, a tune comes along that keeps me energised and uplifted at the same time. This is such a tune. The light but driving music is enhanced with top vocals. It certainly puts me in ‘A Better State of Mind’
