"Those who dwell among the beauties and mysteries of the earth are never alone or weary of life."
Rachel Carson
Whenever we step outside, we encounter an ever-changing and fascinating world. If we choose to look. A flower growing in the cracks of a wall, a cat stretching in the sun or a tall and imposing tree providing an umbrella of shade, all these wonders are there for us to appreciate and feel a deep connection to. This familiarity can provide comfort and reassurance, so much so that we too often take it for granted and don’t notice this beautiful and dynamic environment. Rachel Carson certainly saw and cherished the natural world. An early voice on the damage chemicals were doing to humans and nature, her excellent writing drew attention to how we were polluting our world and increased demands for change. Her work, research and writings are a testament to her pursuit of scientific and historical knowledge and the deep love and wonder she had for the natural world, raising concerns on issues that were not widely debated for another 20 years and are, incredibly, still a cause of contention to this day. My sure you find time to dwell, wallow and soak up the reassuringly wonderous beauty of the world and you may end up feeling a little less alone and slightly more connected than before…
Until next week, be safe and enjoy the trails...
