"It's the rough side of the mountain that’s the easiest to climb; the smooth side doesn’t have anything for you to hang on to."

Aretha Franklin

When you have a challenge in front of you - be it a mountain, a race target, a fitness goal, or a destination to explore - you can see and understand the task at hand. It can be examined and tackled, possibly by breaking it down to manageable pieces, or mapping out a route and programme to get you there. The smooth, slippery side can contain hidden dangers. Not only is the smooth side designed by its very nature to pull you to the bottom, making it easy to fall, but complacency can begin to creep in, luring you into a false sense of security. It is important to remember that ‘the obstacle is the way’ and it is through the consistency of effort that the best results are achieved. After a training programme or once a race is completed, it is easy to slack off and sit back, taking the path of least resistance and enjoying the rest. It is important in these times of recovery to remember not to let the smooth side take you all the way back to the beginning…

Only one choice for the artist this week, the Queen of Soul (and the provider of this week’s quote), Aretha Franklin. This is one of my all time favourites and a simply wonderful soul classic…
