“Great men, great nations have not been boasters and buffoons, but perceivers of the terror of life, and have manned themselves to face it.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson
When we run the trails, or hike the paths, we are stepping out from the known and into the slightly unknown - channelling Emerson’s words and facing any challenges head on. We are not simply preparing for what could lie ahead or talking about the possibilities, but pushing ourselves to discover more about whatever is in store and how we react in the event of difficulty in real time. Emerson himself lived by his words; he was a pioneer in American thought and lived through times that were troubling, hard and uncertain. He didn’t shy away from these fears and challenges, but stood firm to spread his ideas on the philosophy of self-reliance in the face of such difficulties. In today’s world, we can very easily be distracted by the noise and bravado of ‘boasters and buffons’, making it even more essential that we continue to prove to ourselves how to behave when adversity or grit are required. A fearless mindset such as this comes from within and is shaped and moulded by continuous hard work and effort, so lace up and get out there…
