“Climate is what we expect, weather is what we get.”

Mark Twain*

Whether or not Mark Twain actually said this quote is not really here or there, as I think it’s an excellent little pithy one. It speaks to me of the inherent unpredictability of trail running and hiking, not just related to the weather, but the wider sense that we must be prepared and ready for the unexpected, whatever may happen. We often have set expectations and preconceived notions of what is in store for us when we step out the door, but life (and Mother Nature) can have other plans. The ability to adapt and overcome these challenges, both physically and mentally, is a key attribute to endurance sports, as well as life in general. Embrace the unpredictability of life and roll with the punches, as we have no way of knowing what is in store for us the next time we head out on an adventure…

*Although this quote is widely attributed to Mark Twain, there is no direct evidence that he is the originator of it…but, he did include it (or a very similar phrase) in an Essay in 1887, and there is no one else it is definitively attributed to, so I am going with it…

Until next week, be safe and enjoy the trails...

Each week, I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection of music. Like trail runs or hikes, the playlist will be varied and eclectic, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy…

Californian, Camaron Marvel Ochs, better known as Cam, has written, produced and performed with some big names in the music world, but it’s her own country pop work that is now getting serious attention. This tune is a lovely throwback hit (Fleetwood Mac, anyone?) with a chilled tune and a fine overall sound. As Cam herself said, “We pray, we scream into the void - and we assume it’s about the answer that comes back… But it’s the calling out that frees you.”
