“He who fears he shall suffer, already suffers what he fears.”

Michel de Montaigne

Fear is the natural response to the threat or possibility of danger or death; it is an essential survival mechanism humans have used to avoid risky situations since we first started walking upright.  In the past, we would have had no choice but to face our fears. Hiding away and protecting ourselves from the dangers of everyday life were not compatible with hunting, scavaging and living. In modern society, however, if we choose to, we can retreat from life and avoid any need for facing the things that have a grip over us - rational or not. Ultimately, this gives those fears more control - increasing the seeming gravity and weight they have. This can be the dangerous outcome of circumventing any chance to face these fears, to confront them directly and realise that our fears are merely constraints of thinking.  In reality, though, you should not fear what you can address. Resisting the fear itself and living in a preoccupied state about something that will probably never happen is far scarier than the fear itself…

Each week, I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection of music. Like trail runs or hikes, the playlist will be varied and eclectic, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy…

Australian Sia moved to London for a new scene and fresh direction after the disappointing sales of her debut album. At this time, she worked with the funk master, Jamiroquai and downtempo legends Zero 7, whose sounds and influences can be heard all over her sophomore album, Healing is Difficult. This track, Fear, demonstrates that sound perfectly. It’s also a fitting tune for his week about recognising how fear is holding us back…
