“I am not telling you to make the world better. I’m just telling you to live in it. Not just to endure it, not just to suffer it, not just to pass through it, but to live in it. To look at it. To try to get the picture. To live recklessly. To take chances. To make your own work and take pride in it. To seize the moment.”

Joan Didion

The United States of America in the 1960s and 1970s was a rapidly changing cultural, political and social landscape. The shifting of attitudes and ideas during this time was captured through a movement known as New Journalism, which aimed to produce more immersive and engaging coverage that also allowed space for a more subjective and personal interpretation of current events. One of the key figures in this movement was Joan Didion, who was able to effortlessly shift between genres and subjects, penning novels, screenplays, political reports and essays. Her attitude and approach are summed up beautifully in this week’s quote. The idea it is better not to be a bystander, letting things happen to you, but to get out in the world and make the most of it, live it and experience all it has to offer. Still very much relevant to us in today’s unpredictable and unbalanced world as it was when Joan Didion and writers like her were reporting on the social changes of over 50 years ago…

Until next week, be safe and enjoy the trails...

Depending on where you live, you might face rain and mud regularly or only occasionally, but it’s best to be fully prepared whatever the weather…

It can take an adventure or a challenge to reveal who we are and what we are made of. That was true for this writer…

Taking a step back can be beneficial for your body and mind, but that doesn’t mean stopping, just adjusting your routine…

If you want to get out and live in the world and soak it all up, as the quote suggests, then here are some multi-adventure ideas that could be worth exploring…

Each week, I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection of music. Like trail runs or hikes, the playlist will be varied and eclectic, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy…

This mash-up has been a fixture of Norman Cook, aka Fatboy Slim's, live DJ sets for over 20 years. Despite asking many times over the years for permission to use the ‘Satisfaction’ sample so the tune could be released, but always being flatly denied, the Rolling Stones have finally relented and done us all a favour. Two great (and very different) tunes coming together brilliantly and pretty seamlessly…
