"Men and nature must work hand in hand. The throwing out of balance of the resources of nature throws out of balance also the lives of men.”
Franklin D. Roosevelt
Today’s trail runners and hikers have something in common with the 32nd President of the United States: a deep understanding and appreciation of the relationship between humans and nature. This need for balance and respect is something that most people take a lifetime to learn. This interconnection isn’t one of dominance and conquest, but is rooted in reciprocity. For thousands of years, we have learned that what we give, we get back; what we take without returning, we eventually lose. Our love of the natural world as a place to play, explore and enjoy comes from the very fact that these wild places exist and are protected. Outdoor adventure and endurance sports are entirely dependent on functioning ecosystems — intact trails, clean waterways, forests that haven't burned, snowfields that haven't retreated to almost nothing. We don't just get to enjoy nature; we need it. This is the deep symbiotic relationship we enter into every time we step out onto a dewy forest trail at dawn, or a vast mountain hiking route with the summit in mind. The natural world we rely on for our wild adventures will be there for us; quiet, consistent and strong, but we have to hold it in the reverence it deserves and protect it from damage and destruction. This need for respect and protection shouldn’t be considered a burden, but a fundamental element of what makes these sports and activities we love worth caring about and preserving…

This song is an incredible musical journey, seemingly blending different musical genres into one helluva track. It starts with some dreamy strings, merging into a funky R’n’B beat…but from there it hits you with some disco fire before settling into more of a classic pop sound. Just a wonderful tune from Rhye that deserves to be played on repeat…
Each week, I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection of music. Like trail runs or hikes, the playlist will be varied and eclectic, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy…
