"The man who can drive himself further once the effort gets painful is the man who will win."
Roger Bannister
We live in a golden age of running: the sub 2-hour marathon barrier, once thought impossible, has been broken. Elite athletes smashing course records in 100 and 200 mile ultras and women competing on equal terms with - and often beating - the best men in trail running. Not to mention the advances in kit and technology that help make us more efficient and recover faster. When Bannister broke the four-minute mile in 1954, people likely felt the same way; how could this be bettered? Has the limit been found? For perspective, until just a few years ago, many thought it physically impossible for a human to complete the marathon in under 2 hours. Yet standards kept climbing, and times have kept falling ever since. That perspective is worth holding onto. We must remember that our current level, in running or anything else, is rarely our ceiling. The currently unimaginable can become possible with application, dedication and the right mindset. Bannister proved it over 70 years ago, and today's athletes keep proving it again. Speaking of which, it's the famous Hardrock 100 race in Colorado this weekend. Watch for records falling and who can find another gear ‘once the effort gets painful’...
Until next week, be safe and enjoy the trails...

Races are selling out and the demographic is getting younger…running is showing nos signs of slowing down it’s post-pandemic recovery…

I have covered Rachel Entrekin in many previous editions for good reason…and now she is back with the ins and outs of completing a multi day race…

Chasing the ‘flow’ can be frustrating as it can be a fickle master, but trail runners have a better chance than those that favour the roads…

We want our children to love the outdoors and experience the joy of being outside as much as we do, but there is a way to introduce it slowly and safely..

Continuing on from last week’s ‘amazing 90s tunes, remixed and refreshed’ theme, I present this beautiful, chilled tune by Everything But Girl, Before Today, remixed by one of the masters of laid back beats and sounds, Chicane. This remix was released in 2015, so not new, but I can’t resist a chance to reconnect with some old favourites and love how these remixes add a new flavour and twist…
Each week, I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection of music. Like trail runs or hikes, the playlist will be varied and eclectic, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy…
