"Success is peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to become the best of which you are capable.”

John Wooden

John Wooden was a man who preached the need to strive for success. Not just in sport, but in every area of life. At the top of his ‘Pyramid of Success,’ which he claimed contained the building blocks for succeeding at basketball and in life, was ‘Competitive Greatness’.  He defined this as ‘performing your best when your best is required. Your best is required each day.’ This is true of us all, not just top basketball players, sponsored professional ultrarunners or highly paid coaches. In everything we do, we should have the satisfaction of knowing we gave it our best shot, that we put in the maximum effort we could and performed with the concentration and dedication the situation allowed. Visible success, whether FKTs, race wins or world records, can take years of such effort compounding over time. Most people only ever see the results at the end of this process from afar without knowing the daily commitment that it takes to get into that position. If you put in that work, every day, you will know and experience the peace of mind that stems from the effort being made…

Until next week, be safe and enjoy the trails...

French ultra runners are having a bit of a moment this summer, with amazing results at many of the top events. Some of the best of them share their top tips to help you get into, and thrive, in trail running…

Another Frenchman to hit the heights this summer, Frédéric Tranchand, reveals how he prepared to conquer the OCC this year, from two decades of endurance training to choosing the right gear…

After the first attempt resulted in his heart stopping for hours and being in a coma for five days, Tommy Price returned to try to conquer the challenge that left him for dead…

I often cover videos, films or documentaries about trail running and the athletes in the sport, but what does it take to capture the images and riveting stories behind the scenes. Sometimes, it’s almost as tough as competing in the events themselves…

This tune’s name shares the same initials as my wife, it also has a warm and happy air to it, just like her as well…it is also a darn lovely slice of indie pop, so many good reasons to choose it. From the American duo, Hovvdy (pronounced Howdy) this one to help eek out the last warmth of these late summer days as the nights start to draw in and the days get cooler…

Each week, I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection of music. Like trail runs or hikes, the playlist will be varied and eclectic, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy…
