"Quality is not an act, it is a habit."
Aristotle
For Aristotle, developing a strong moral character - and therefore helping one to live a virtuous life - could be partly obtained through habitual action. In his view, ethics should not just be treated as a philosophical discipline, but we should make every effort to put the theories and concepts into practice. There are two approaches to this Aristotelian position: the naturalistic and non-naturalistic. On one side is our inherent, natural and organic brain function that goes into making us human. On the other side is our non-naturalistic side. This is the side that requires grounding in the power of will. Aristotle believed that we needed to cultivate our ethical practices through continual practice. It was through both the appreciation of the various virtues and by applying them together in practical ways that we can hope to achieve eudaimonia (happiness or flourishing). Eating a bit healthier, sleeping a bit more or stretching every day all add up and contribute to bigger success. Whether you are learning a new skill, training for a big race or wanting to be a better person and lead a more fulfilled life - habit is a good place to start. One step at a time, over and over...
