"Experience without theory is blind, but theory without experience is mere intellectual play."

Immanuel Kant

There is a dynamic and engaging interplay at work when thinking and reflecting on theory and experience, especially through the lens of trail running and hiking. Great thinkers, from Plato to Ralph Waldo Emerson and John Muir, extolled and celebrated the deep lessons nature can provide us by blending experience and thought. Embracing both knowledge and practice in harmony is essential in trail running, hiking and outdoor adventures. Using the insights gleaned from books, developing training plans, reading up on the latest kit and pre-route planning and combining it with the exposure of being out in the wild, exploring our own physical and mental limits in the beautiful and challenging environment of the trails. Certainly, theory will never replace experience. Try riding a bike for the first time - no amount of manuals, YouTube videos or instructions will help you go smoothly from the off - it will still present quite a challenge! So we should use this combination and lean into it to help transform our runs or hikes into chances for growth, to build resilience and to find moments of happiness. When you are next out and about in the world, whether just beginning your trail running journey or an experienced athlete, remember that the world around you is both a physical playground and a chance to refresh your mind and spirit. Try and embrace it all…

Until next week, be safe and enjoy the trails...

Each week, I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection of music. Like trail runs or hikes, the playlist will be varied and eclectic, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy…

Empirical /ĕm-pîr′ĭ-kəl/ (adj.): Relying on or derived from observation or experiment…It is also the name of this dark, deep tune from Ocula. I listen to a lot of trance and electronic music when out running the trails. It’s what I get lost in while I am gaining my own empirical evidence, hopefully while not getting too physically lost!
