“One can choose to go back toward safety or forward toward growth. Growth must be chosen again and again; fear must be overcome again and again.”

Abraham Maslow

Abraham Maslow is mainly recognised for two things, neither of which you would probably associate with him straight away, yet both have some influence on trail running and hiking. Firstly, he is widely known for introducing the ‘Hierarchy of Needs’, which starts with a human’s basic physiological and safety needs that must be met first and works up to the top level of ‘self-actualisation’. In Maslow’s words, this is when we achieve the fullest use of one's talents and interests—the need "to become everything that one is capable of becoming”. The same is true of outdoor activities and adventures; we must take care of the basics to reach our full potential on the trails. Getting sleep, rest and proper nutrition, for example, can form the foundation and be a key component of performing at our best when we need to. The second thing linked to Maslow is the phrase “if all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail”, which is widely attributed to him. This is where variation and mixing things up are so important. Different training ideas, trying alternative sports and varying approaches in training can lead to significant gains in other areas of our lives. There are times when a hammer is needed, but there are plenty of other times when something more subtle might do the trick…

Until next week, be safe and enjoy the trails...

Despite the improvements and continuing updates to AI, maybe don’t think about ditching your running coach just yet…

One of the foundational runs of a solid coaching plan, the fartlek is a great way to get some speedwork and spice up your daily runs at the same time…

Slip off the shoes and get back in touch with the natural earth under your feet, for the benefit of the mind and body…

The Nike Pegasus has been a constant on the running scene since its launch in 1982, despite shifting eras, innovations and running philosophies...

LaRussell used to perform under a different name, but since releasing more personal music, he changed to his real name to represent himself more fully. He is a prolific artist, releasing a string of albums over the last three years or so. This track is a catchy, chilled number with a smooth flow, lovely stuff for the slower runs and efforts…

Each week, I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection of music. Like trail runs or hikes, the playlist will be varied and eclectic, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy…
