"Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson

I would hazard a guess that ‘Carpe Diem’ is one of the most widely known classic quotes…if asked, a majority of people would understand the meaning, or at least have heard this quote.  Ralph Waldo Emerson’s version, above, is effectively the same quote but with subtle and important distinctions.  There is a personalisation and internalisation to the quote as ‘write it on your heart’ is calling you to make it a factor of your character and something that is a daily emotional and spiritual quest.  While signifying it is the ‘best day’ calls to me that no matter what happens, whether good or bad, we need to try and make it positive and see the opportunities that lie within each day.  We are continuously bombarded with negative stories and all have worries that follow us around, weighing on us heavily, but through adopting this attitude and striving to perform at our best, both physically and mentally, we can rise above and make each day count, no matter the circumstances or challenges we may face…

Until next week, be safe and enjoy the trails...

Two women, two photos; both changing the way the world looks at and approaches women’s equality in running…

While not everyone enjoys the solitude and demands of solo hiking, the rewards can be worth the mental and physical test…

Running on a treadmill is not the most enjoyable experience for most people, but if weather or other circumstances force you indoors, it’s best to make the most of it…

This is not the normal subject matter I cover here, but this is too good not to share. Two brothers, one year, one minivan and a LOT of birds…

Each week, I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection of music. Like trail runs or hikes, the playlist will be varied and eclectic, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy…

This is a track that echoes across time, with a distinctly 1960s Reggae sound, mainly due to the vocals from legend, Sugar Minott, who died in 2010. It was produced and recorded by Victor Axelrod (producer with the amazing Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings) in that same year, but was only released in 2023 as part of an album of collaborations. It’s an absolute gem of a track…kick back and enjoy!
