"Both tears and sweat are salty, but they render a different result. Tears will get you sympathy; sweat will get you change."

Jesse Jackson

I had a different quote lined up for this week, but after hearing of Jesse Jackson’s passing at the age of 84, I felt this one was much more appropriate and timely. Mr Jackson certainly had other things in mind when he said this, but it is equally applicable to the trials and tribulations that we encounter during trail running, hiking or any goal or task that requires endurance and perseverance. In striving to be better, fitter and stronger, we may need to sweat to produce results. Sometimes we need sympathy and consolation, but if we are looking for change, then it’s the sweat that counts. It’s the sweat that most people don’t see; the importance of consistent effort and perseverance that lead to the greatest change. Sweat signifies the discipline needed to reach your goals. But let’s be honest, it’s not just about sweat; don’t be afraid of the tears either. Tears might not directly help you achieve your goals in the same way (though I’ve shed many tears of joy when running ultras), but it’s vital to remember that vulnerability is part of endurance; those moments when you feel like you cannot carry on, but you find the strength and will to do so, even if it there are tears along the way. Whatever it takes, in whatever you are trying to achieve, try to find the grit, determination and resolve that strong leaders like Jesse Jackson demonstrated throughout their lives…

Until next week, be safe and enjoy the trails...

Once again, the course won and no competitors managed to complete the ‘world’s toughest ultra’, just as Mr Lake would have wanted it, I am sure…

Depending on who you ask, running clubs are a chance for newcomers to get involved in the sport or a performative mass vanity exercise…

Multi-story car parks are not the most inviting or inspiring places to be at the best of times, but how about running a marathon around one?

Spencer Matthews breaks down the grimmest elements of his insane challenge, definitely not one for the faint of heart..

Welcome back, Miss J. Scott…It’s been 11 years since Jill Scott’s last album, but the neo-soul queen has a simple answer behind the delay: “I’ve been living, honey”. Fair enough, I say. I have selected an upbeat, passionate number with a banging horn section and an inspiring message for this week’s selection…a very welcome return!

Each week, I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection of music. Like trail runs or hikes, the playlist will be varied and eclectic, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy…
