"Unfortunately, many people do not consider fun an important item on their daily agenda. For me, that was always a high priority in whatever I was doing.”
Chuck Yeager
In today’s constantly connected, always-on, let’s go world, it can be all too easy to get lost in the data and constant barrage of information we are fed. Even during supposedly pleasurable events, like runs or hikes, we could have pace, route, cadence and calories burned at the forefront of our minds. Monitoring the sports watches on our wrists or checking our phones to ensure we are keeping up becomes second nature, not only for the prescribed action we are intended and committed to, but also to ensure we are never out of the communication loop for too long. This is where we need to inject some fun back into proceedings, keeping our daily routines lively and interesting. Simple choices like leaving the technology behind for a run, opting for new routes or mixing up the pace we run at (the popular ‘Fartlek’ workout literally translates to ‘Speed Play’) can help to provide some joy and novelty into otherwise potentially tedious events. We can escape the pressure of performance and results by focusing on the more fun, curious and surprising sides of life. This is a choice that needs to be made, or the bombardment will continue and the simple joys of fun will be overrun and lost…
