According to Dr Carol Dweck in her brilliant book, Mindset (thank you, Andre, for the recommendation), people are dramatically influenced by how they see their abilities. People with a fixed mindset firmly believe that their abilities and skills are set and can’t be changed, whereas people with a growth mindset believe that abilities can be developed. This difference also affects how people approach life and, most notably, think of failure. If you possess a growth mindset, you see failure as a chance to learn and develop. An opportunity to grow and learn to improve and are not afraid to take the chance and make the leap, even if it may fail. Unsurprisingly, those with a fixed mindset shy away from such behaviour and avoid trying or taking risks as they see failure as an indication of their individual weaknesses and shortcomings. The good news is you can adjust your mindset and develop the necessary thinking to be more on the growth mindset side of the equation and change the way you see failure and, therefore, the way you approach life. If you don’t give it your best shot, you may never know what you are truly capable of…
