"There are two ways of exerting one’s strength; one is pushing down, the other is pulling up.”

Booker T. Washington

Booker T. Washington almost certainly didn’t have endurance sports in mind when he wrote this quote, but many metaphors and parallels can be drawn from it and applied to the trail running and hiking world. Just this week, two runners sacrificed personal best times at the Boston Marathon to come to the aid of a runner who had collapsed just before the finishing line, literally pulling him up and helping him finish the marathon. The running community is famed for its solidarity and companionship. This isn’t just a sidenote, but the foundation of the sport. The backing and belief of a training partner who tells you that you're capable of more than you believe, the volunteer handing you a gel at an aid station when you need it most, or the pacer who diligently helps you through the long nights. These acts of support can be the difference between failure and achieving our running goals and dreams. The community and camaraderie found in trail running can help you overcome the toughest obstacles and, in the darkest, most desperate moments, pull you up and drag you to the mountain summit, help you manage the long-distance miles, or cross the finish line when you feel like you can’t go on. Relying on other people in times of need is not a weakness but a strategy that can provide the extra bit of strength and mental fortitude when it's really needed…

Until next week, be safe and enjoy the trails...

Back to the beats this week…I don’t know much about this track and can’t find much info on who is behind it, but I do know that when it came up on a mix during a recent run, it gave me a little boost and a spring in my step, which is always welcome…

Each week, I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection of music. Like trail runs or hikes, the playlist will be varied and eclectic, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy…
